About Wilkins
Overview
Wilkins Elementary is one of 22 elementary schools in the Jackson Public School District. It serves students in grades K-5. Wilkins houses several special programs including Gifted Education, Wilkins Performing Arts Department, S.U.P.E.R. Boys and S.U.P.E.R. Girls, and educational programs for academic success. Our staff is made up of an energetic group of educators and life-long learners who are highly qualified to teach. We have several teachers with advanced/graduate-level degrees and certifications. To ensure that we reach every student, our school also has an incomparable group of instructional partners, intervention team and volunteers who work diligently to reinforce our vision and mission.
School Namesake
Iola Tapley Wilkins 1866-1951
Iola Tapley Wilkins 1866-1951. She was born in Jackson and attended Fair Lawn Institute for Girls. She began her teaching career at Central School in 1889 and transferred to Lee School in 1902. She was the first principal of Galloway, and later taught at Duling and Lee. As principal of Galloway, she organized a parent-teacher association, thus becoming the founder of the first state-affiliated parent-teacher association in the Jackson Municipal Separate School District.

Vision
The vision of Wilkins Elementary School is to create an environment where students feel safe, take risks, excel academically, socially and become productive citizens in a global society.
Goals
- Students’ achievement and performance on the statewide assessments will improve by 10% this school year.
- Teachers in all instructional areas will incorporate quality academic centers/small groups that will challenge and enhance the learning process and academic performance for all students.
- Teachers in all instructional areas will formulate and implement lesson plan of academic rigor.
